TRAGEDY IN JEJU: BEHIND A NATIONAL TRIUMPH

2019

This 10-minute documentary is my first attempt at producing a documentary film. As part of the National History Day Korea competition, I have explored the 4.3 massacre that took place in my home of Jeju under the prescribed theme of ‘triumph and tragedy in history.’ I focused on how the incident was an undeniable tragedy carried out in the name of national triumph, and have been awarded third place in the Senior Individual Documentary division.

WHY WE WALK THE OLLE TRAIL

2018

2nd prize winner for the Jeju Olle Hidden Directors contest, this video is a collection of interviews with four foreigners who decided to walk the Olle Trail in Jeju. From a foreigner’s perspective, the video examines why walking the trail can be attractive to different groups of people, and highlighted the intimacy one feels with the locals while walking, a variety of natural and man-made landscapes, and being able to witness the quintessence of Jeju island.

I NEED NOBODY

2019

As a part of my IB Visual Art course, I have produced a short stop-motion film with Lego blocks. A story of a person whose loved ones are no longer present with him, the film highlights the modern era’s paucity of human interactions and community spirit by juxtaposing the presence and absence of neighbours around him. The unusual format of a stop-motion film has been selected upon inspiration from a Wes Anderson stop-motion Isle of Dogs.

JUNIOR SCHOOL: A PLACE OF HAPPY LEARNING

2018

Working with my school’s marketing department, I have produced a promotional video for the Junior School. I conducted multiple interviews with teachers and students, to eventually create a coherent narrative of the school’s being ‘a place of happy learning.’ A notable attempt I have undergone in the production process was the use of drones, which was inspired from a Mike Mills movie 20th Century Women.

ARTS FESTIVAL PROMOTIONAL VIDEO

2018

In association with other students, I directed a promotional video summarising and promoting my school’s iconic Arts Festival. In order to give the final outcome a sense of rhythm and joyfulness, I chose to edit the scenes in meticulous sync with the background music—The Greatest Show. Arranged chronologically, the scenes show the progression of the festival over multiple days. I focused on showing the students’ enjoyment of the festival.

TRISCHOOL MUSIC FESTIVAL PROMOTIONAL VIDEO

2017

The first promotional video I have produced, this video was produced to record and sketch my school’s Trischool Music Festival. In the editing process, I deliberately attempted to highlight the meaningful musical interactions between students and teachers, as well as that among students, because I considered them to be the essence of the event. I employed some basic statistics to elaborate on the considerable scale of the festival.

HERE COMES THE SUN

2017

This is a 7-minute short film that I directed for my school’s House Competition. It was produced with the prescribed stimulus ‘on an otherwise typical day,’ and told the story of a newcomer in the school who manages to make new friends in my boarding house. In the making of this film, I have been inspired by the Beatles song Here Comes the Sun, which eventually became the title of the film, in its melody and message.

SCENES OF SINGAPORE

2016

Produced to record my school trip to Singapore, this was the first ever video production that I have shot and directed. I have attempted to closely follow my friends’ itinerary in a strictly centred style inspired by Wes Anderson. The initial shooting of the video has been done with my phone, and the post-production process with Final Cut Pro X. Different camera techniques, including panorama, timelapse, and panning were tried and selected from.
